Eclipses in astrology are like potently super-charged new or full moons and can pack the punch of three or four moons – so imagine how a full moon impacts your normally and magnify that three or four times!

In ancient times eclipses were scary times but with modern science, we know that it is a natural event but not one without power and influence!

The ancients often believed a celestial event like an eclipse to be a bad omen, that the sun or the moon vanishing from the sky was a harbinger of disaster, a sign of devastation or destruction to come.

Eclipses occur 4-6 times a year and they always come in pairs with a new moon and full moons and solar and lunar eclipses.

Eclipses in Astrology in Pairs of Signs

Eclipses occur in opposite signs for example the recent (and upcoming) Libra and Taurus eclipses of 2023 (and the earlier Aries and Scorpio ones).

Eclipses will keep occurring in pairs like this every five and a half months for 18 to 24 months until they are done. Once a pair of signs is finished, it will not be back for about seven or eight years.

Eclipses in the same degree and sign will not occur for approximately another 19 years.

Families of Eclipses

Eclipses also occur in families of eclipses known as the Saros Series. These families were first discovered by the Babylonians and can last for over 1,000 years. The word Saros means “repetition”.

Bernadette Brady has written extensively about the Saros Series(or families of eclipses) in her book “Predictive Astrology: The Eagle and the Lark”.

Each series has a certain personality or focus to the eclipse pair.

For example, the current solar and lunar eclipses relate to Saros Series 7 South and interestingly it first occurred in 1248 and will end in 2492! This saros series according to Bernadette Brady is a time when huge obstacles suddenly and easily clear or on the other side a personal crisis will manifest and move through your life rapidly – either way, things will move at great speed.

When will an eclipse be prominent for you?

Not all eclipses will impact you in the same way, some you may barely notice and others may turn your life upside down.

Eclipses that are at corresponding degrees of your natal planets

If you have natal planets at the same degree of the eclipse in your natal chart (5 degrees for this latest lunar eclipse) the eclipse is likely to impact you in a more profound way especially if the eclipse is at the same degree as your sun, moon or ascendant.

Eclipses that are in the sign of your sun, moon, or rising sign

When eclipses are in the same sign as your sun, moon, or rising sign are likely to be highly impactful and be turning points in your life. So if you are a Taurus or Scorpio sun, moon, or rising this is likely to be a big year for you. This is especially true if the eclipse falls on, or very close to your birthday.

Solar Eclipses in Astrology

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon stands between the Sun and earth, which makes the sun appear to go dark.

Solar eclipses herald new beginnings and opportunities and are often positive with great news seemingly out of the blue.

The total eclipses of the sun are very special and have been associated with wars, famines, floods, unprecedented climate changes and the death or birth of dictators, rulers, presidents and kings, especially near the area where the total eclipse occurs.

Lunar Eclipses in Astrology

Lunar Eclipses occur when the earth is exactly between the sun and the moon and for a short time, the earth’s shadow may turn the moon into intense shades of red, brown, and grey or may completely disappear if you are in a certain part of the world. However, whether you can see this visually or not the energy of the eclipse will still impact you.

Lunar eclipses are a time when we need to face our shadows, our darkness, and our secrets. Lunar eclipses can be a turning point in our lives that catalyse big changes, and help us to break patterns, and shift dynamics.  Lunar eclipses are related to endings and typically are more emotional than solar eclipses.

Tips for working with Eclipses

  1. Pay attention to the news you receive in all manner of ways during this time as it will be important.
  2. Understand that Eclipses speed our timeframes up – they might bring things to the fore that you thought were months or even years away from occurring.
  3. Eclipses illuminate what needs to change in our lives – including illuminating the truth about people in our life.
  4. Events that happen at eclipses are not reversible – so avoid resisting or fighting them and know they are in your highest good
  5. Avoid taking major action until a week or so after the eclipse, especially in regards to a lunar eclipse. Solar eclipses are better for taking action and starting new projects.
  6. Try to keep your schedule light during an eclipse as unexpected issues will arise needing your attention

Nations, like stars, are entitled to eclipse. All is well, provided the light returns and the eclipse does not become endless night. Dawn and resurrection are synonymous. The reappearance of the light is the same as the survival of the soul.
