The top six skills you need to succeed in online business
I’ve been in online business for seven years now. And while the journey has been fast, when I look back on all that I’ve learnt over the past seven years… I’m blown away! I had no idea what it meant to have an online business when I first started in 2011. I had no idea about marketing or social media or list-building… but I took it upon myself to find out! And along the way, I found my feet. I found the strategies that worked. I found the tools to support me. And I found those non-negotiable skills that I needed to succeed. So today, I want to share the top skills you need to succeed in online business!
Be clear on what you’re trying to achieve
No matter what I’ve been working on, what I’ve been offering or what I’ve been promoting in the past seven years, clarity has always been my secret to success. This means being really clear on what I’m trying to achieve and being really intentional about the actions that I take.
To help you get clear on what you’re trying to achieve, here are a few questions you might like to ask yourself:
What do I most desire?
How do I most want to make money in my business?
What is one thing I can do that will make the biggest impact on my business?
What type of work truly suits my strengths and desired lifestyle?
For example, asking myself these questions saw me create my very first e-Course in 2012 when I got clear on my desire for passive income (you can read more about this journey and the questions I had to ask myself here). And more recently, I slightly shifted my target market as I explored soulful business and launched offerings like Launch Mastery and my Soulful Launching Package. While these were big moves and decisions, my saving grace was clarity!
Create an engaging website
With all of the social media platforms and tools that we have for sharing our work online, creating an engaging website might not seem like an important skill you need to succeed in online business. And I often hear: “Why do I need a website when I can just use social media to build my business?”
But I believe that having an engaging website is key to capturing your target market and building a profitable and successful online business. Sure, social media can help to drive traffic to your website but your entire business shouldn’t be reliant on Facebook or Instagram.
Your website is an opportunity to create deeper connection with your audience and give them a chance to read more of your content (like blog posts), sign up for your list (which we’ll talk about soon) and even purchase from you. And when it comes to launching programs and e-Courses, a good website (or sales page) is key!

Show up with consistent communications
I really value consistency in my business and one of the areas where I’ve been most consistent in my business is in my communications. This means writing regular blog posts, sending weekly emails and showing up on social media each and every day!
Now in the short-term, it might not seem like you’re making an impact. But after seven years of consistent communications, I’ve been able to connect with thousands of women (many who have gone on to buy my programs or work with me). And I’m here to tell you: it makes a difference and really does allow you to succeed in online business!
Commitment to growing your list
I mentioned before that having your target audience as social media followers isn’t enough to succeed in online business – especially with the algorithms and all the changes that are happening to the way that social media works. So while social media is still important, I’ve always prioritised building my list.
While it’s tricky to calculate conversion rates on social media, I’ve found my newsletter list to be more predictable. When starting out with my e-Courses, I knew I could rely on a conversion rate between 3-4% although I had as high as 20% (this also meant that I knew how big my list had to be to achieve my goals). Recently, I’ve watched email conversion rates drop to around 0.5%-2% (with an average of 1%) which is a disappointing but predictable conversion rate. Knowing these conversation rates, and being committed to building my list, has allowed me to build highly profitable e-Courses and a successful online business!

Create amazing products and services
This one is pretty straight-forward: you need amazing products and services to be truly successful in online business!
When I first started my business, there were less people in online business and far less people creating e-Courses. And now, it feels like everyone has an online business and e-Course! And that’s okay, there is still room for you. But it does mean that your products and services need to be top-quality to stand out!

Share your work with the world
The final skill that you need to succeed in online business is one that I personally struggle with: visibility. It isn’t enough to create amazing products and services, build your list and communicate with your tribe consistently. You also need to show and share your work with the world – and you need to do it often!
And if I can do it, so can you! It might not always be easy to show up, it might be uncomfortable to begin with but take every day as a challenge to be seen in your business.
Each new launch, I challenge myself to try one new form of marketing. Last launch, it was a pop-up Facebook Group community. The launch prior to that, it was a five-day challenge. And in all of my launches, I’m always exploring new ways to show up on social media and in my emails. Not to mention: paid Facebook advertising, Google remarketing, writing guest posts, scoring PR opportunities, being interviewed on podcasts and magazine advertising.
If I have learnt anything about marketing over my past seven years of business then it would be to try and experiment with it all… then see what sticks!
