“It’s been a tough year.”
If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard that sentence said about 2016… well, let’s just say, I’d have a lot of dollars!
It has indeed been a tough year, for many people.
On a universal level, we’ve seen events unfold across the globe that have hurt our hearts and bruised our souls. We’ve seen things like: beloved public figures pass away, violence and unrest escalate, animal species go extinct, high profile couples divorce, and politicians throw around hate speech like it ain’t no thang… “I feel like the Universe has kind of gone off the rails this year,” said a friend to me recently, only half joking.
Of course, it’s not just high-level global stuff that’s made 2016 full on…
This planet-wide turmoil has also been playing out on a personal level for many of us – particularly those with empathic or highly sensitive tendencies.
Countless of us are feeling discomfort. Like we’re being worn down by the grind. Like we’re one step removed from our passion and joy. Like it’s just plain hard right now to climb out of the slump we’ve skidded into.
Can you relate to any these feelings?!
If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
And you’ll be pleased to know, there’s a reason why this year has hit us so hard.
According to the ancient art of numerology, 2016 was always going to be a rough ride – a year of extremes, of change, of closure; a year of endings, exits, and giant shifts…
Why? Because 2016 is a ‘9’ year, and 9 years have a tendency to play out with a bang.
A quick primer on numerology
Numerology says that there are nine different ‘seasons’ that the world goes through, each lasting a year.
Each season represents a different part of our collective journey – from new beginnings, to periods of growth, right through to endings.
A new season is ushered in each January, which means that every New Year, the whole of humanity enters a different phase of spiritual evolution. Then, when each of the 9 seasons has played out, the cycle is complete and it starts all over again.
(Side note: this is only the tip of the numerology iceberg. There are so many cool things you can unearth by delving into the language of numbers, and if you’re interested in finding out more, I recommend seeking out an experienced practitioner.)
To find out what season a particular year represents, you calculate the ‘universal number’ of that year, by adding up the digits until you’re left with a single number.
So, 2016 = 2 + 0 + 1 + 6 = 9
If you end up with a double-digit number at that stage, you keep on adding.
So, 2017 = 2 + 0 + 1 + 7 = 10, 1 + 0 = 1
And that number right there – that beautiful, hope-filled ‘one’ – is what we’re talking about today.2017 – as a universal ‘one’ year – is a chance for an epic new beginning. Click To Tweet
2016, as a 9 year, has seen things ending – thought patterns, beliefs, paradigms, partnerships, even lives.
But though it might have seemed like a tumultuous ride, endings are not inherently negative. In fact, they’re a natural part of the divine order of things, and are entirely necessary if we want to make way for the new.
And 2017? It’s all about the new, baby!
In numerology, a universal ‘one’ year signifies birth – starting something new, stepping up to the next level, entering a new arena, shedding that which no longer serves us, and tapping into the divine creative energy of the Universe. It bids us to birth our dreams, to step into a role of leadership, and to take action on the visions that have been sparking inside us.
The universal year number is about the global energy that everyone is experiencing to some degree but to get even more specific to calculate your personal year number do the above but with your birthday as well
So my birthday is 26th November 1980 so my personal year number is 2+6+1+1+2+0+1+5 (you use the year of your last birthday)
1+8 = 9
Yep I got a double whammy, a universal 9 year and a personal 9 year!
You can find out more about personal year numbers and the meaning of different numbers here in an article by my Reiki Master and Healer Sara Brooke.
So if 2017 is a once-in-nine-years opportunity for a fresh start, what can you do to make the most of it?
Here are 5 strategies to make sure you’re harnessing all the fresh creative energy the Universe has to offer, and maximizing your momentum as we shift from ‘9’ to ‘1’…
Embrace the remaining energy of this ‘9’ year.
2016 is about endings and closure, and if you don’t want to drag the residue of this ‘9’ into the fresh start of next year’s ‘1’, it’s imperative to reflect on the endings and exits that have taken place in your own life over the past 12 months.
Grab your journal and ask yourself:
- Where am I at right now – emotionally, physically, mentally, spiritually?
- What am I most grateful for?
- What is ending in my life?
(This doesn’t have to be something as obvious as a death or divorce. It could be that your youngest child is starting school, signalling the end of this phase of motherhood. Or perhaps you’ve realized that a certain goal no longer lights you up, signalling the end of a path you’ve been pursuing.)
- What isn’t working for me?
- What am I afraid of?
Practice surrender and release
Of course, the Universe likes to make sure we’ve really learned our lessons before it lets us move on. Which means: it’s not enough to just reflect on your above answers intellectually, you need to genuinely feel and internalize them in order to move forwards.
Here’s one way to do that:
After reading through your answers to the above questions, ease yourself into a gentle seated meditation. With your eyes closed, and your breath slow and steady, allow the words, images and emotions that come up to course freely through your body.
What do they feel like? Do they cluster in a specific part of your body – your stomach, perhaps? Or your neck? Or sternum?
In your mind’s eye, what do your feelings look like? What colour are they? Are they light or heavy? Sticky or smooth? Transparent or murky?
As you explore all the different aspects of the emotions as they flow through your body, don’t judge them (or yourself). Allowing them and holding space for them is the best way to process and move through them.
Continue to sit with the feelings until you notice them start to lessen – perhaps the edges become less sharp, or the sting starts to go out of them, or the electric charge around them starts to diminish.
As they start to dissipate, repeat this affirmation of release and surrender:
“I am grateful for all growth. I allow this energy to move through me. I release everything that no longer serves me and surrender to my highest good.”
When you’re ready, gently open your eyes and come back to your surroundings. How do you feel?
Lay the foundations (and don’t delay!)
Now that we’ve started to emotionally cut the cords of 2016, it’s time to prepare for 2017.
And the time to do that is NOW.
Way too many people start planning the coming year on December 31st. Or when they’re tired and hung-over on January 1. Or – goddess forbid – they don’t take the time to do any planning at all!
If you ask any super-successful entrepreneur (and I’m talking the Richard Bransons, the Oprahs, and the Elon Musks of the world) they can always tell you, in detail, what their goals and plans are years in advance. Sometimes decades in advance. That’s how they achieve such greatness – their finely honed vision is their secret weapon (accompanied by massive action, of course!).
So: start planning for next year NOW. November is the perfect time to get clear on what you’re aiming for and what you want to call in. (But if you’re reading this blog later than November, don’t worry – any action is better than no action, so just do this step as soon as you can! J)
Grab your journal and start brainstorming:
- This time next year, what do you want to have achieved?
- How do you want to feel as you pursue these goals?
- What abundance do you want to attract?
- What kind of support will you need?
Because this is a ‘1’ year, it’s also a powerful time to ask yourself these same questions, but for the whole nine year cycle that lies ahead – What do you want to achieve in nine years’ time? What will you feel, attract, etc.?

Have a ‘100 day plan’
If you’ve been following the lead-up to the U.S. election (ummmm, please guys – we’re counting on you to do the right thing!) you might have heard the phrase ‘100 Day Plan’ thrown around by pundits and commentators.
Basically, it’s thought that those first 100 days in office set the tone for the entire presidency. If the freshly sworn-in president spends those first three months pfaffing about and not actually achieving anything, it’s a sign that they’re disorganized and ineffective. But if they can get a truckload of stuff done and dusted, it’s a sign that her presidency will be a success.
So candidates will usually have highly detailed plans – broken down project-by-project, day-by-day, for a full hundred days – to ensure the whole Administration gets off to a cracking start.
So how does this apply to your 2017?
Well, once you’ve got your larger visions laid out for the year (and cycle) to come, it’s super powerful to get granular. Nail down the details of how you’re going to start your year. Get right into the nitty-gritty of your first hundred days of 2017 – What will you achieve each month? What do you need to achieve each week to make that happen? And what will you need to get done each day to keep your weeks on track?
Grab your journal and get ‘storming again.
Get the support you need to make it happen
No man is an island. And no successful entrepreneur-goddess is either.
By which I mean: if you want to achieve your goals, YOU NEED SUPPORT!
Now, support could mean getting a V.A., a business coach, an in-house designer, a copywriter, a tech whiz, or something like that. All fantastic ways to bring your dreams to life.
But it could also mean: Getting a cleaner in once a fortnight so that you don’t have to scrub the bathroom floors quite so often. Or getting your partner to drop the kids at school two mornings a week so you can head to Pilates. Or outsourcing your ironing or grocery shopping or whatever it is that would help you most.
AND, though often forgotten, support can ALSO mean having a tribe or circle of women around you who get what you’re doing and where you’re going. (In fact, this kind of support is often the most powerful of all – holding space for others to achieve their goals as they hold space for you… There’s nothing quite like it.)
A great form of support that combines both this community aspect AND the business coach aspect is a mastermind program. Masterminds allow you the best of both worlds – strategy and sisterhood. A good one will guide you through all the above steps too – from assessing where you are right now, to envisioning where you want to go, right through to planning precisely how to get there.
