Can you have a big launch without a big list? It’s a question that I get asked in all my webinars, challenges, Facebook Live videos and programs. And when I surveyed my list after my last launch, it came up again.
“I’m just waiting to grow my list before I decide to launch my program”
I get it, list-building is important for launching your e-Course. But it isn’t the only way to have a big launch!

I even mentioned in a previous blog post that building your list and sending emails isn’t as effective for selling e-Courses as it was 1-2 years ago.
So how do you have a big launch without a big list?
How to have a big launch without a big list
Focus on your list-building mindset
I’m seeing a trend where people are waiting for the perfect number of subscribers before they launch their e-Course.
“I’ll launch my e-Course only when I have 500/1000/5000 people on my list”
The number might be different for you but I’m positive that this mindset is stopping you from getting started. It might feel like it’s motivating you to get list-building but it’s really a limiting belief and it’s holding you back from e-Course success.
Because what you are really saying is this:
“I won’t have a successful launch without a big list”
And it’s not true!
I have definitely witnessed that small lists can convert better than big lists. Most of the time, smalls lists are more targeted and engaged than big lists and are filled with subscribers who truly value your work and aren’t just collecting freebies.
So how do you switch your list-building mindset from a feeling of lack to a feeling of abundance?
Practice gratitude for the people on your list:
Instead of logging in and counting the numbers each week, take the moment to feel gratitude for the people who have said YES to your emails. And remember that every number represents a real life person! Read their names and send some gratitude their way!
Set clear goals:
We all know that to get to where we want to be, we need to set goals with crystal-clear clarity. This means instead of saying “I need a bigger list”, you set achievable and measurable goals like “I want to grow my list by 100 subscribers during the pre-launch list-building phase of my launch”. If you’re building your list for a launch then you might also like to consider the ‘1% of your list’ rule. The rule basically means that 1% of your list is likely to convert to a sale. This means getting clear on how many people you’d like to welcome into your e-Course and using that to set a list-building goal. For example, if you want 10 people enrolled in your e-Course and the conversion rate is 1% then you will need a list of 1000 subscribers. If you currently have 800 subscribers then your goal will be to “grow my list by 200 subscribers”.
Create an abundance affirmation:
Now that you know what your goal is, it’s time to create a supportive affirmation. This overrides any limiting beliefs you might be telling yourself and continues to open the energetic container for your goals to manifest. Some examples of my own personal abundance affirmations include:
“I invoke infinite abundance”
“I am limitless & create my own success”
“The authentic me is infinitely supported by the universe”
I even design a little graphic in Canva and print my affirmations to hang up in my workspace!
Detach from the outcome:
This might seem counter-intuitive to the tips above but it’s vital in the manifesting process. Setting clear and achievable goals helps to open the energetic container and detaching from the outcome allows the universe to do it’s thing. This means having faith and trust that all that is meant to be will be. This also explains why your list NEVER grows when you check it every hour or two to see if anyone has subscribed.
I learnt a lot about detaching from the wonderful Tosha Silver who I got to hear speak at Emerging Women last year. She says “Your dreams are really limited” which might sound like a weird thing to believe but she explained further that when we are lost, when we are in the dark night of our soul or even when we just don’t feel clear – offer it up to the divine – because in doing so things that we can’t even conceive of right now – can happen. Our dreams for ourselves are very limited compared to what the universe may serve up.
So remember to create some space and step away from your screen for the magic to happen!
Use launches to build your list
What comes first – the big launch or the big list?
I’m a huge believer in the idea that launches actually build your list – especially during the pre-launch list-building phase (which I talk about in my upcoming webinar).
There should be a phase of every launch dedicated to building your list. This is achieved by strategic opt-ins that ‘plant the seed’ for your paid program. Then there are the people who sign up to your free content during and after the launch of your program.
While the aim of launching is to sell your e-Course, it also has added benefits including the increase in visibility that you might need to build your list. Creating and launching an e-Course also increases your credibility and authority which is great for list-building!
So if you’re still trying to build your list before you launch your e-Course – the launch of your e-Course might be exactly what you need to build your list in the first place.
Take the long-term view
The online landscape is changing and it’s becoming more and more difficult to achieve “overnight success”. This means we have to take a long-term view of our business and go for the slow burn approach!You are here to create a whole life’s worth of work! Click To Tweet
This means you can still launch without a big list and build it as you go!
The key to the slow burn approach is to continue attracting new people to your list each round. It doesn’t need to be a huge amount and people may ‘sit’ on your list for a while before purchasing. But with each launch, you’re establishing credibility and trust with your subscribers and sometimes you’re even preparing them for future rounds.
So if I were to sum this topic up in one sentence it would be this:

How do I know? Because that’s what I achieved back when my list was small, and it’s what plenty of my students achieve now with their small lists.
