I’m sorry if you’ve had a bad experience creating an e-Course.
Maybe you spent ages developing your program, fantasised about the European holiday you were going to take with all your earnings… then had your confidence completely shattered when no one bought it.
Maybe you hustled so hard to get your course off the ground (planning, creating, launching) that you burned yourself out, got really sick, and pushed your adrenals into the red zone (don’t worry, I’ve been there too)!
Maybe you haven’t created an e-Course at all, but you’ve had enough disappointments in your business that your heart has been bruised and battered, and you’ve become scared to take any more risks…
If that’s you, I’m really sorry you had that experience!
It makes my stomach sink and my heart hurt when I hear these stories limiting your business growth, it really does.
Because the truth is, when done right, e-Courses are one of the fastest, most predictable ways to propel yourself along the path to freedom (whatever that means to you).
And yet, because there’s so much conflicting information out there, and so many hack “gurus” preaching silver-bullet solutions (not to mention an ever-growing number of platforms and providers to choose from), way too many women get overwhelmed and burnt out, and end up writing off e-Courses as simply “an unrealistic pipe dream”, or something that “just isn’t possible for people like me”.
If you can relate to any of these fears or blocks, I want you to know it’s completely normal to feel that way and to have those doubts. You are NOT ‘dumb’ or ‘broken’ or ‘not cut out for this’ (all phrases I’ve heard clients use to describe themselves).
It’s just that you’ve been hurt, you have doubts, and your mind is trying to protect you from stepping outside your comfort zone again.
Four stories limiting your business growth
So here are the four stories limiting your business growth and one action to support you in overcoming them.
“I’m afraid it will fail”
This story runs deep in all would-be e-Course creators. You have the perfect idea. The one that makes your heart race. The one that truly lights you up. And just as you begin to visualise your success story… you’re hit with self-doubt. You lose your confidence. You find yourself saying “I’m afraid it will fail”.
I’m not going to sugar coat this one… there is a chance that your e-Course idea will fail. As much as I would love to, I can’t promise your success. But what I do know is that failure is an inevitable part of the journey to success.Failure is success in progress. Click To Tweet
I’ve had many “failures” like my first mastermind offering that I was unable to fill during the first launch. The offer was too vague and I hadn’t developed the concept enough. I could have stopped there. I could have admitted defeat and accepted that mastermind offerings weren’t my jam. But I decided to tweak my idea, get crystal-clear in my message and change up the offering that turned into The Ultimate e-Course Mastermind. And you know what? The mastermind ended up bringing me roughly $250,000 over the two years that I ran it. Imagine if I’d stayed stuck in the “failure” story and let fear stop me!
So are you going to let this story limit your business growth?
Here’s what to do:
Take out a pen and paper and write down each of the fears that you have associated with creating an e-Course. Write down your worst fears and all the worst case scenarios you can think of.
I’m afraid that it will fail and I will embarrass myself.
I’m afraid that it will fail and I will make a loss.
I’m afraid that it will fail and I will have wasted all of that time.
Now I want you to take a look at the list and ask… Then what? What would you do? How would you overcome the situation?
Keep writing until you have all of the situations covered… and all of your fear has dissipated. I always find the worst case scenario is never as bad as it seems in our head!
“But I didn’t get the results that I wanted last time”
Oh I totally get this one and as I described in the previous section, I’ve totally been there. A number of times, actually!
I mentioned that my first mastermind offering was a “failure” but I have to admit, my first round of Launch Mastery didn’t get the results I wanted either…
There are so many reasons for this, which I’m going explain below, but the important thing to remember is: past results shouldn’t define future expectations.“Celebrate the effort, not the result.” - Cathy Collaut Click To Tweet
I didn’t let the results from my first launch determine my expectations and my second round of the Launch Mastery program was a huge improvement!
Want to know why? A lot of it has to do with the product lifecycle which I explain in a lot more detail here.
The product lifecycle explains why the first launch of a program can often be smaller (as you’re only tapping into the ‘innovators’ market). But as you continue to launch, you start to tap into a bigger market including the ‘early adopters’ and ‘early majority’ and this is where you start to see the biggest growth. So how can you use this to support you?
Here’s what you do:
Take a look at the product lifecycle and identify where your current e-Course or program is sitting.
If it’s in the first half of the cycle… then keep going! You might be one or two launches away from huge growth!
If it’s in the second half of the cycle… you might want to make some changes and look at creating a new program to appeal to the innovators, early adopters and early majority! It’s always smart to have programs sitting at different parts of the product lifecycle!
“I don’t have the time or energy”
There is a brilliant quote going around the interwebs that says “You have just as many hours in the day as Beyonce”. Now I’m not saying that you need to become the world’s biggest popstar but I am saying that you should spend your hours doing work that is truly important to you.
So if you find yourself fully booked out with no room to grow in your business…
And if you’re craving more freedom and flexibility in your life….
And if creating an e-Course and teaching students would truly light you up in your business…
Then you should prioritise your tasks and devote your hours to making it happen!
Here’s what you can do:
Grab a piece of paper and draw a vertical line down the middle.
On the first half of the page, write a list of all the tasks you currently perform in your business.
On the second half of the page, decide whether you want to ‘keep’ the task, ‘outsource’ the task or ‘remove’ the task. Keep in mind that the main aim of this activity is to free up your time so you can create an e-Course.
Now take a look at the list of tasks to keep. With this current workload, how much time do you have to commit to creating, launching and delivering an e-Course?
Take the actions required to make it happen. This could mean seeing less 1:1 clients for a specific amount of time, hiring a virtual assistant to support you or retiring a certain part of your business that doesn’t light you up anymore.
Now all you have to do is block the time in your calendar and get creating!
“I got sick last time and I don’t want it to happen again”
I’m going to lay a love-filled truthbomb on you right now: you can launch your e-Course without getting sick, burning out or frying your adrenal glands (I talk more about this here)!
It just means launching in a more soulful way. It means looking after your mindset, staying in alignment, honouring your body and being a true self-love rebel!Be open to a new way! Click To Tweet
Here’s what you can do:
When planning the launch of your program, look at all aspects of your life.
- Nourish and rest
How do you want to honour and support each of these areas? What actions will you take?
Now write these into your launch calendar, book them in and stick to them just like you would for launch activities like webinars!
So if you’ve had a bad experience trying to create an e-Course in the past, I truly am sorry.
However, if you still crave the freedom an e-Course can bring – time freedom, financial freedom, never-having-to-work-with-crappy-clients-again freedom – please know that you haven’t used up your “one shot”.
Instead, treat your heart and business with gentleness and compassion.
Release whatever fears or doubts you may have, to create space for a new possibility.
And finally, give yourself permission to follow your desires again, then get the support you need to move forwards…
The truth is, the only way you’ll ever change your circumstances is by clearing out past hurts and taking action on the dreams that have been pulling at your heartstrings for years now…
You know the ones I mean…
… having control of your own schedule.
… earning money in your sleep.
… having the time, budget, and energy to prioritise your health.
… taking as much time off as you want.
… and doing work you love every day.
All of it’s possible! Consider this your invitation to flow forward and leave the past behind!
